Mastering “Used To”: Talking About Your Past Habits

Have you ever wanted to talk about things you used to do regularly in the past but don’t do anymore? Like playing outside all day when you were a child, or maybe a hobby you no longer pursue? In English, we have a perfect phrase for that: “used to.”

This article will help you understand and practice using “used to” to talk about your past habits!

What Are Past Habits?

Past habits are actions or routines you did regularly in the past, but you no longer do them.

👉 తెలుగులో: గత అలవాట్లు అంటే, మనకు ఒకప్పుడు ఉన్న అలవాట్లు, ఇప్పుడు మాత్రం ఆ అలవాట్లు లేవు.

How to Express Past Habits in English

We use “used to” to talk about these past habits.

✅ Positive Sentences (What you used to do)

Examples (with Telugu Meaning):

  • I used to play cricket. → నేను క్రికెట్ ఆడేవాడిని.
  • She used to watch cartoons every day. → ఆమె ప్రతి రోజు కార్టూన్స్ చూసేవారు.

❌ Negative Sentences (What you didn’t use to do)

To say you didn’t do something regularly in the past, we use “didn’t use to.”

Structure: Subject + didn’t use to + base form of the verb

Important Note: After “didn’t,” we use “use to” (without the “d” at the end of ‘use’).

Examples:

  • I didn’t use to like coffee. → నాకు కాఫీ ఇష్టం ఉండేది కాదు.
  • She didn’t use to speak English. → ఆమెకు ఇంగ్లీష్ మాట్లాడే అలవాటు లేదు.

❓ Question Sentences (Asking about past habits)

To ask if someone used to do something, we use the question form.

Structure: Did + subject + use to + base form of the verb?

Examples:

  • Did you use to study late at night? → నీవు రాత్రి ఆలసిగా చదువుకునే వాడివా?
  • Did they use to live here? → వారు ఇక్కడ ఉండేవారా?
